Camp Rock 2, Joe Jonas, interview

SEVEN MINUTES OF HEAVEN WITH THE JONAS BROTHERS

Premiering tonight on The Disney Channel is CAMP ROCK 2: THE FINAL JAM. A sequel to the hugely popular 2008 film, CAMP ROCK, once again THE JONAS BROTHERS join forces with DEMI LOVATO in the hopes of breaking even more records for the channel. Following in the footsteps of the successful HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL franchise, the CAMP ROCK movies feature a bankable pop music soundtrack and the kind of Disney fresh faces that guarantee a ‘tween following. A few months ago, we sat down with three other reporters for a short roundtable discussion with NICK, JOE and KEVIN JONAS to talk about their TV, movie and tour plans. The complete, unedited interview follows.

Demi Lovato, Jonas Brothers are back for Disney’s kid-friendly ‘Camp Rock 2′

The Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato are back to lead “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam,” a new film packed with songs, a love story and a rivalry with another camp.

The many twists and plot lines in the film, which airs Friday night at 8, make up for a shortage of the real heartstring-pulling moments that made the original “Camp Rock” a sweetheart of a film.

The setting is again Camp Rock, a summer sleep-away for budding rock stars. A lot has changed since we last met the heroine, Mitchie Torres, played by the delightful Demi Lovato.

Lovato shone in the first film as the shy, clumsy girl with a powerful voice, and she returns to camp more confident than before.

When viewers last saw Mitchie, she and troubled rocker Shane Gray (Joe Jonas) were singing eye to eye. In a Disney film that’s about as close as they can get to actual romance.

This summer, Shane and his two musical brothers (played by Kevin and Nick Jonas) stop by Camp Rock during a break in their concert tour. It seems that Shane wants to get to know Mitchie better.

She, however, is soooo consumed with planning a sing-along showdown with their rival, Camp Star, that she doesn’t have time for Shane.

Wow, where did the magic go? It’s like they’re married.

“Camp Rock 2″ is a better ride for Jonas fans. In the first film, Nick and Kevin, arguably the more talented brothers, were shoehorned in. Here, they’re full-fledged cast members, with lots of good lines, cute inside jokes and performance time.

Even Frankie Jonas, known as the “Bonus Jonas,” is here.

Nick, not Joe, has the love story in “Camp Rock 2″ when he falls for a girl in the rival camp. But this couple’s relationship never nears the intensity of Mitchie-Shane in the first film.

“Camp Rock 2″ is as squeaky clean as you’d expect a Disney film to be, and that’s okay. It’s a formula that works well with the target audience, who will hang on every moment and hum along with every song.

But what is surprising is the lack of a real heart.

Sure, there are moments when viewers will root for the Camp Rock crew – like when they face the other camp in a televised competition (a nod to “American Idol”). But there’s very little of that will-they-get-together stuff that had viewers rooting for the characters and made the first “Camp Rock” an uplifting emotional ride.

“Camp Rock 2,” instead, puts all the focus on the group, rather than its main puppy-love tale.

That one story challenge aside, “Camp Rock 2″ will be a hit with the Disney crowd. There’s no doubt the soundtrack, featuring songs written by the likes of Kara DioGuardi, will be a big seller, too.

There’s very little a viewer won’t see coming, although there is one twist that signals that losers can be winners, too.

And surely with “Camp Rock 2,” Disney has another winner.

Camp Rock 2, reviews

Exclusive Q&A with The Jonas Brothers

Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam premieres tonight at 8 p.m. ET on Disney Channel. J-14 sat down exclusively with the Jonas Brothers to chat about Joe and Demi’s on-screen kiss, their own camp experiences, and of course, the famous birdhouse from the first Camp Rock!

J14: What was your favorite part about filming Camp Rock 2?
Kevin: I really enjoyed “Heart and Soul” — that performance was really cool. But I also loved working with the kids, the junior rockers, that was a lot of fun.

J-14: Joe, what’s your character, Shanne, and Mitchie’s (Demi Lovato) relationship like this time around?
Joe: They’ve been talking all year and now they’re seeing each other again for the first time. They want to get to know each other a little bit better and spend more time together, but finding that time is really hard — she’s trying to help out the camp like crazy and Shane respects that, but he’s getting a little frustrated. He’s like, “Come on — I came here for you and for the camp, but majority of the reason is for you, come on!”

J-14: Can you tells us anything about Shane and Mitchie’s kiss?
Joe: I can’t give those details away unfortunately — I can say that much. They need that in the relationship. I think that will help things, clarify that they’re dating.

J-14: Did you guys ever go to real camp growing up?
Joe: I went seven years in a row! There’s always really cool stuff to do at camp. Lots of sports events. I remember a relay race at the end of the camp that was pretty intense.
Nick: Kevin broke his pelvis [at camp]!
Kevin: I literally fractured my pelvis at camp. For some reason they thought it was a good idea to stack — you know like bunk beds usually have two — well we stacked one, two, and then the third one. I was on the top bunk, rolled off in my sleeping bag, fell, and fractured my hip. For the rest of the summer I had to be on crutches. I couldn’t walk. It was pretty hilarious.

J-14: Kevin, does your character Jason finally get his birdhouse?
Kevin: Of course! There is a very crucial scene with the birdhouse. I can honestly say people will be excited to see it and then devastated for me all at the same time. It’s fantastic. It’s going to be awesome.

Joe Jonas talks running, social responsibility and Bieber

Joe Jonas, let’s admit it, our favorite of the crooning, swoon-inducing Jonas Brothers, will be running Monday morning in the Joe Jonas iWin 5k Fun Run/Walk at Nova Southeastern University in Davie.

The NSU run is one of several events that Jonas and his Change for the Children Foundation is hosting across the country to raise funds for Special Olympics. Jonas is no stranger to this kind of work: He and his brothers won the 2010 Do Something Music Artist Award, presented by VH1 and dosomething.org to recognize socially conscious and volunteer-related efforts of young artists.

We had a quick phone chat with Joe, modest and almost bashful, from Cleveland, a stop on the Jonas Brothers’ tour that on Tuesday hits the Cruzan Amphitheatre near West Palm Beach.

Tell us about your relationship with Special Olympics.
It’s something that’s been in my heart for a long time now. I started working with them about a year ago. I like to run, so we came up with the idea to do a fun run, where everyone could particiapte. We did a run in San Antonio and it turned out really well.

You are pop superheroes, using your powers for good. Not the case will all pop stars. Was that always a goal when you were coming up?
We were raised to always give back. Individually, we all do what we have something in our heart for: With Nick it’s diabetes research, and Kevin works on volunteerism.

And we get a lot back from the experience. I was talking to a girl on the phone the other day… and she’s not going to live very much longer. And I just kept talking to her and talking to her. I spoke to her for about an hour. We were shooting the Arthur Ashe Kids Day [concert at the U.S. Open in New York], and I held up production, but I just had to keep talking to her. She was so adorable.

At the fun run on Monday, you’ll be running right there with the other runners? Could be pretty hot. Are you prepared?
“I’ve been training. [His tone suggested a big grin on his face.] I just got out of the gym. I have a new trainer, and we do different workouts. I try to work in a few miles every day. Today we did a 5K.”

Do you listen to an iPod when you run? What’s in it these days?
I really like a band called Band of Horses. And the new album by the Black Keys. It’s really good. As far as music I run with, I’ve also been listening to a lot of dance pop, stuff from Europe. Anything the carries a beat. I love to listen to music when I run, like totally zoning out to an entire album.

Bieber?
Sure, I have a couple of his songs. I couldn’t be happier for the guy.

Anything special for fans at the concert?
We’re pretty excited to be there. We haven’t toured, or stopped there in a while. When we were routing this tour we made it known that we have to go to Florida.

You’ll be in town for a couple of days with the run and the concert. Where do you like to hang out in South Florida?
Oh, I just love the beach, man. Get me to the beach, and I’m happy.
